Paper Roll Sizes Explained — 2 1/4", 3 1/8", 2 5/16" and More

Receipt paper size specifications look confusing at first — fractions of inches, lengths in feet, core sizes — but once you understand what each measurement means, choosing the right roll takes about 30 seconds. Here's the plain-English breakdown.

What the Width Measurement Means

The first number (e.g., "3 1/8"") is the width of the paper in inches. This is the measurement that must match your printer's paper compartment exactly. Too wide and the paper won't fit. Too narrow and it will feed crookedly or produce misaligned prints. To measure your current roll, simply measure across the width of the paper from edge to edge.

Standard Width Sizes and Who Uses Them

2 1/4" — Credit card terminals and mobile POS. Used by Verifone Vx520, Ingenico iCT250, Clover Mini and Flex, Square Terminal, PAX A920, and most handheld payment devices.

2 5/16" — Fuel dispensers only. Used exclusively by outdoor pump dispensers including Wayne Ovation, Gilbarco Encore, Tokheim Quantium, and Bennett BDI. Not used in any other POS application.

3" — Kitchen impact printers using bond paper. Used by Epson TM-U220, Star SP700, and NCR kitchen printers. Requires an ink ribbon.

3 1/8" — The most common POS receipt printer size. Used by Epson TM-T88, Star TSP100, Clover Station, Square Register, Citizen CT-S310, Bixolon SRP-350, and most countertop POS printers.

4" — Label printers and wide-format thermal. Used by Zebra ZD220, ZD410, ZD420, and similar label printers common in healthcare and warehousing.

8.5" — Full-page mobile printers used in law enforcement for citations and field reports. Used by Brother PocketJet PJ822, PJ823, PJ662, and PJ663.

What the Length Measurement Means

The second number (e.g., "230'") is the length of paper on the roll in feet. More length means fewer roll changes. For high-volume operations, longer rolls reduce labor and service interruptions significantly. Common lengths for 3 1/8" receipt paper: 200', 225', 230', 273', 300'. For 2 1/4": 50', 70', 80', 85'. For fuel dispensers: 400'.

Always Choose the Longest Compatible Roll

If your printer supports both 200' and 230' rolls, always choose 230'. The longer roll typically costs only marginally more but reduces paper change frequency by 15%. For high-volume registers processing hundreds of transactions per day, that adds up to significant labor savings over a year.

How to Find Your Current Roll's Size

  1. Remove the current roll from your printer
  2. Measure the width of the paper with a ruler — this is your width spec
  3. Look for any printing on the paper itself — the spec is often printed near the end of the roll
  4. Or use our Find My Paper tool — search your printer model and we'll show you the exact spec
